I favor nature photography, so I chose Ansel Adams for my inspiration. Adams was know for soft yet expressive nature stills. The photo I chose to imitate was “Oak Tree, Snowstorm” from his Yosemite collection.
The Imitation
My imitation lacked snow, so I sought to make the composition of the photo true to the inspiration. Adam’s photos are known for expressing the contrast between tones in nature with a soft overall focus. I went to the arboretum, and simply took some pictures that I thought really fit myself. I then searched Adams work for a similar photo and after a quick play with the highlights and the saturation I have my final product. I used a high aperture to try and get a fully focused shot. I got the softness by feathering the contrast along the light and dark edges. I like the similarities to Adams work, but I honestly love the aspects that make it mine the most.
