Garrett Curfman Final Project

I chose to show the behind the scenes of the production side of what a photo shoot of Barbie looks like. My inspiration came from David Parise who takes photos of Vintage Barbies. I chose to show to backside and set up of the images because i think its interesting to see how the idea of this perfect Barbie is fake and manufactured creating false promises to the youth that Barbie is in fact just and a false reality. This idea was true a couple years ago and now we see diversity and evolution of size, shape, ethnicity, disabilities in Barbies which is good. I am focusing on the typical old fashioned idea of Barbie and the backside of how they create these “perfect” images.

Garrett Curfman Assignment 3

I chose to photograph a couple different things related to the coronavirus. The first picture I chose to take was of my sister. She had gone to the doctors and they had recommended getting tested for cova-19. She came back home with the las on. She told me they stuck a long stick in her nose, and it hurt. I went to target to get food supplies and it was like a ghost town. On the floor they had the tape x to make sure customers were standing far enough apart. On the intercom they also made announcements suggesting that we stand 6 feet apart. My mom works at the Hershey med center. She is a floating nurse so she could be anywhere from working in the ER to her office and anywhere in between. We went to the hospital and she showed me some of her stock that she’s had with supplies. There were so many different types of medical equipment that they had on hand just to be safe. The hospital is also kinda scary. On the other picture you can see everything is wrapped up to stop the spread from germs. Even driving around to all these places I was taking notice of all the signs that say take out and to practice social distancing and that no visitors were allowed. It’s good to see that all of these places have made effort to try and prevent further spread of the disease.

inspiration

photographer George Hurrell is a portrait photographer that photographed Hollywood Stars in a glamouros way in the 1930’s and 40’s. The harsh shadows in this photo show the dramatics of the emotion. There is hard contrast in this photo to allow depth to show in this very productive way.
this photo is a portrait of Gene Kelly in a position showing his masculinity and charm as a performer back in this time period. This is a less dramatic but still a sharp photo that expresses a different emotion- happiness. Gene jelly was all about making people smile through his singing and dancing.

The photographer I chose to research is Bernice Abbott. She is an American photographer that photographs architecture found in New York. She became one of the most important portrait photographers in the 1920s, but I focused more on her architectural style of photography in urban New York, as it is what she is known for. The photo I chose is called Blossom Restaurant, 103 Bowery, Manhattan, Oct. 24, 1935.

THE INSPIRATION:

Blossom Restaurant, 103 Bowery, Manhattan, Oct. 24, 1935.

IMITATION

When I was looking for pictures to try to imitate, Bernice’s original photo stood out to me because I knew of places downtown that replaced his image pretty close. I pass down this ally everyday so I knew the location pretty well and it imitates the restaurant in my first picture. The second picture is a zoomed out view of the location strip of restaurants and shops. I knew the area mimicked her photo because of the different levels, having the shop up the stairs, and the restaurant going down the stairs.
