For the final project of 201 I decided to look at what has been going on in our homes and around our neighborhoods. Everyone is meant to be inside because of this pandemic so I took a reflection on that with different things such as mask, cleaning supplies, the news, the toilet paper supply (cause that was the joke before everything got to serious). I thought that making images about corona would be interesting because I think that some images that come from not just my work but from others are going to be apart a movement of where these images are going to define our generation. There will be photos that go into textbook and schools are going to be able to talk about this part of history and before we fly through it we should take a moment to look around and pay attention. If you have a chance to make images of this you might as well because we don’t want to miss this part of history.
I also wanted to put my same images but black and white
For this assignment I decided to go a bit on the domestic point while also mixing in the current problem of COVID-19. I did photos around my house but I did photos that had people missing. I was trying to make something where you could a person or a family being without even being there. There is also an intentional pieces in each photo to show something about COVID-19 and things that are clean. The TV is on CNN with the news, the kitchen has mask sitting on the counter, and the table has a wipe and a mop that are in view. I placed everything to show a little that is unsaid. I thought that each image would create an underlying hint to COVID-19 without it being right in your face.
COVID-19 Crisis in action. So we are all on quarantine and are suggested to leave our house once a day whether that be going to the supermarkets or walking around outside to get fresh air. At the same time we should be keeping social distancing, at least 6 feet apart. Stores, restaurants, bars and more are closed for at least two weeks or until governor Wolf let’s up about this restriction. All of this came out is pretty quickly and there was panic and memes and jokes but now it’s here, it’s happening, there was a case on campus, everything is hitting a little to close to home. It is important that we all stay safe while still getting our education. While zoom is a good program it was not intended to be used by everyone in the country who goes to high school, college, and some jobs from 8-5 Monday to Friday non stop and it’s causing technical issues. Internet at our homes our also getting delayed because our whole family is home so everyone is on the WiFi
“Dance Hall, New York,” by American photographer Ed Feingersh, circa 1953
So for this assignment I chose Ed Feingersh. I was going through the Family of Man book and I came across two different photos that spoke a lot to me. They are by two different photographers but both images mean something to me that I can’t really describe. Either way they show people and family and there is some type of life that is shown in each image. So over the weekend I went bowling and decided that there would be nothing but friends and families, old people young people, and ones having a good time so this was a perfect opportunity.
Three on a Bench, Detroit River,” by American photographer Bill Rauhauser, circa 1952.
I also included this photo because when I went through The Family of Man” this one also stood out to me.
For this photo I tried to make it like the first one to show what was happening. Instead of a hall playing music it is the crowd who are bowling together. They are unaware of my camera and they are only focused within each of their own lanes.
This image is like the second one. It is people sitting I chairs consumed by themselves while everyone around them is doing something else. When I took this photo I was sitting across and I had my camera in my lap so they didn’t know that it was being taken. I think when I went into this assignment I didn’t want anyone to know I was taking their photos because I think it allowed for a more natural faces and reactions.
This one is a mother and her three kids. There are other people in it trying to distract what is happening but in a busy place there is always going to be other people. However when you focus on the mother and the kids you can see that the four of them aren’t really concerned with what is going on around them. Just that the little boy was talking while the girls were very interested in what he was saying.
I just added this one in also. I think got somewhere it goes with the events of the day. It is a bit more broken up than the other ones but I think it works as well.
For this first assignment I am going to be doing Edward Weston. I like his still life and the detail that is in his work. It is full of not symmetry but geometry that does not always seem to flow natural but almost makes sense. Edward Weston is an American from Highland Park Illinois. The date of the picture that I put up is unknown. However it was photographed between 1886 and 1958 because that is the dates that he was born and than died.
Abstract Still-Life Photograph
My attempt:
When I took the photo I I tried getting as close as possible and than with photoshop after I cropped the image in. When I was shooting since I was so close it was a bit hard to focus and I have a 1/8 of a second shutter. The image is still quite detail with out doing much to it besides cropping and making it black and white. I found that keeping it black and white instead of the color made the detail come out more and we already know it’s a fruit. You also can see that it looks really juicy. Almost like you want to cut off a piece and eat it.
My other try:
This attempt was one where I didn’t fully crop the image. I thought it was a bit distracting and once I cropped it it seemed like it fit more of Edward Weston style.
